All you need is a wall. That said, your foot slides differently barefoot versus in shoes, so if you're only wearing socks, put down a non-slip mat or a yoga mat under your feet. Even a small amount of slide in the back foot throws off the stretch angle, and in a worse case can twist your ankle.

The most common mistake is bending the knee too much. A deep knee bend shifts your weight toward the front leg, leaving almost no stimulus on the back calf while loading up the knee joint instead. If the same stretching keeps producing recurring calf tightness week after week, it's time to suspect the cause rather than the stretch.
